If you’re comparing accounting software for your Malaysian business, chances are Xero has come up. It’s one of the most talked-about cloud accounting platforms globally, and it’s showing up more often among Malaysian SMEs moving away from spreadsheets and older desktop software.
This review looks at what Xero actually does well, where it falls short for the Malaysian market specifically, and who it makes sense for. We’re writing this as a Xero Partner ourselves — SASCO was named a finalist for Xero Partner of the Year Asia 2026 — so keep that in mind, but we’ve tried to keep this an honest assessment rather than a sales pitch.
What Is Xero?
Xero is a cloud accounting platform originally from New Zealand, now used by several million small businesses worldwide. Instead of installing software on one office computer, everything runs through the browser or the mobile app, so your financial records are accessible from wherever you are, and multiple people (you, your staff, your accountant) can work from the same live data instead of passing files back and forth.
Key Features for Malaysian SMEs
- Bank feeds & reconciliation — transactions flow in from your bank and get matched automatically, instead of manual entry
- Invoicing — send invoices and quotes, and accept online payments directly
- e-Invoicing readiness — relevant given LHDN’s phased e-Invois rollout for Malaysian businesses
- Real-time reports — cash flow, profit and loss, and performance dashboards updated as transactions happen
- Multi-currency (on the Premium plan) — useful if you trade with Singapore or other regional suppliers/customers
- Mobile app — check invoices, expenses, and cash position without being at a desk
Xero Pricing Plans: What You Actually Get
Xero runs on a tiered subscription model with four plans: Lite, Starter, Standard, and Premium. Broadly:
- Lite — basic invoicing and bank reconciliation, aimed at micro-businesses and side hustles
- Starter — adds bill automation, bank feeds, and cash flow forecasting for sole traders and new businesses
- Standard — auto-reconciliation, financial health scorecards, and longer forecasting for growing businesses
- Premium — everything in Standard plus multi-currency and industry benchmarking, for established businesses
We’re deliberately not quoting exact ringgit figures here — Xero has already flagged a subscription price increase from November 2026, and pricing pages change. Check Xero’s official pricing page for current rates before deciding. What matters more for most SMEs is matching the plan to actual needs: don’t pay for multi-currency if you only invoice locally, but don’t undersize either if you’re about to add a second user or start forecasting cash flow properly.
Where Xero Works Well
- Businesses with a real, recurring volume of invoices, bills, and bank transactions
- Companies trading regionally that need multi-currency handling
- Teams that want to cut down manual bank reconciliation and month-end scrambling
- Businesses working with an external accountant or bookkeeper who needs live access to the books
Where Xero Falls Short
To keep this an honest review rather than a pitch:
- Very low-transaction businesses may find the monthly subscription costs more than it saves compared to simple manual records
- Software alone doesn’t handle compliance judgment — Xero can generate an e-Invois-ready document, but interpreting SST obligations, LHDN filing requirements, or specific exemptions still needs a professional, not just the software
- Garbage in, garbage out — if nobody reconciles or categorises transactions properly, the real-time reports just show you inaccurate numbers faster
Xero vs Other Accounting Software in Malaysia
Xero isn’t the only option Malaysian SMEs consider. Autocount and SQL Account are long-established local players with strong SST/e-Invois localisation and a one-time licence model that some very small businesses prefer over a recurring subscription. QuickBooks and MYOB are other cloud competitors with broadly similar feature sets to Xero. The right choice usually comes down to whether you value Xero’s simpler interface and multi-device access, or a locally-built system’s deeper out-of-the-box Malaysian tax handling.
Our Verdict as a Xero Partner
We wouldn’t be a Xero Partner — let alone a finalist for Xero Partner of the Year Asia 2026 — if we didn’t think the platform holds up well for the SMEs we work with. It’s genuinely good software. But software on its own doesn’t file your SST return or make sure your e-Invois submissions are correct; it needs to be set up properly and paired with someone who understands Malaysian compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Xero good for small businesses in Malaysia?
Yes, for businesses with a genuine volume of transactions. Xero’s bank feeds, invoicing, and real-time reporting save time once you’re past the very smallest scale of operation.
Does Xero support Malaysian e-Invoicing?
Xero is positioned as e-Invoicing-ready, which helps with issuing compliant digital invoices. That said, correctly interpreting LHDN’s specific rules for your business still benefits from professional guidance.
How much does Xero cost in Malaysia?
Xero has four tiers (Lite, Starter, Standard, Premium) that scale by features like invoice limits, automation, and multi-currency support. Check Xero’s official pricing page for current rates, since prices can change — Xero has already announced an increase from November 2026.
Do I still need an accountant if I use Xero?
Yes. Xero organises and automates your bookkeeping, but an accountant handles compliance judgment, tax planning, and makes sure the numbers in the software are actually correct.
Is Xero better than QuickBooks or MYOB for Malaysian SMEs?
There’s no universal answer — it depends on what you value. Xero, QuickBooks, and MYOB are broadly comparable cloud platforms, while Autocount and SQL Account are Malaysian-built alternatives with strong local tax handling. We’ll be publishing a full side-by-side comparison; for now, the right pick depends on your existing systems and how your business trades.
